Thousands of Spaza store registration requests in Etekwini have not been approved because owners cannot be checked.
The window for owners of spaz lodges and food handling companies record their establishments to comply with closed food safety regulations on Friday.
Mayor Cyril Xaba told his executive committee on Tuesday that only a quarter of the requests were approved.
“So far, of 5,500 registration requests, 1,402 have been approved,” he said.
“Among the challenges the city faced are the non -accessible phone numbers and addresses that do not correspond to the place provided, which makes it impossible to check the authenticity of the applications.”
Xaba asked owners to register their business before the deadline.
