Several Russian artists who have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of the country in recent years have spoken out on social media against the war in Ukraine. They use the hashtag #нетвойне (#nowar) to express their concerns.
Sergey Lazarev, who came third in the Eurovision Song Contest in both 2016 and 2019, writes that he “cries like a little boy” and that “no one supports the war”. He asks for the end of the war. “Stop and sit down at the negotiating table,” he addressed the political leaders. “I want my children to live in peacetime.”
Manizha, who finished ninth in Rotterdam last year on behalf of Russia, says she regrets waking up on Thursday morning. “You don’t know where to go, who to help. I sit on the corner of the bed and cry. I cry because it’s not my choice. The current aggression is against my will, against the will of my family, I think against the will of our people.”
The singer says she also has family and friends in Ukraine. “My future husband is half Ukrainian. My good friends are Ukrainians. Russia and Ukraine are not just two countries. We are family. Any war between us is fratricide.”

The Latvian entry of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, the band Citi Zeni, has called on the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) not to allow Russia to participate. ” The Sound of Beauty cannot become the sound of war,” said the Latvian band, referring to the theme of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
