Miss Universe 2024 opens up more space for women

This Saturday (16), the final of the 2024 Miss Universe contest will be broadcast at 10pm on YouTube, on Telemundo. For the first time after seven decades, the contest allowed women over 28 to participate. This year's edition also features a deaf model, and one with vitiligo.

In recent years, the contest has undergone many changes and increasingly accepted models with certain uniqueness. Until 2022, for example, models who had already had children, who were married or divorced were not classified in the competition. With this, Brazilian and Pernambuco model Luana Cavalcante managed to not only compete, but also win Miss Universe Brazil 2024. Married and with a son, Luana now competes for Miss Universe.

The event also features Egyptian model Logina Salah, who has vitiligo, a skin disease that causes lighter patches due to the loss of melanin production.

Another new feature is the participation of Mia le Roux, a South African model who is deaf.

Changes in requirements

After many years of a regulated contest, which included a deadline of up to 28 years old, and only allowing the participation of women considered standard and with cis bodies, Miss Universe has embraced diversity, demonstrating respect for the models and evaluating them in a positive way. Since 2012, the contest has allowed trans women to participate.

Although it was created with the aim of delivering a title of beauty, with changes in society, some changes to the rules are necessary to keep up with modernity, and use the event's fame to give visibility to issues of inclusion.

With seven decades of competition, the Miss Universe it is now run by trans woman Anne Jakrajutatip, who has increasingly opened doors to women. Anne excluded the age restriction from the contest from the year 2024, defining only the minimum age of 18.
