Robbie Williams announces documentary “full of sex, drugs and mental illness”

Robbie Williams has promised fans that his upcoming Netflix documentary “will expose” all aspects of your life as an artist.

The as-yet-untitled documentary series, which was announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival in August, will follow the rock icon as he navigates the ups and downs of being in the spotlight.

In addition to Robbie's usual banter, the show will feature 25 years of never-before-seen archives and intimate footage, covering everything from flattery to addiction and professional and personal breakups.

The streaming giant, which revealed that the documentary will be released in 2023, informed viewers that the production will be a “deep, unfiltered examination” of the 48-year-old singer's life.

Speaking about his current project, the hitmaker revealed that there will be no restrictions.

“It's going to be full of sex, drugs and mental illness,” he said during a chat on The Mike Hosking Breakfast show on New Zealand radio station Newstalk ZB.

Williams joked that although he had “editorial control”, documentarians have “very, very lucky because I want to expose myself more than anyone else exposes themselves.”

“No rules”, he added. “I'm more likely than most people to leave it all out in the open, I very rarely, if ever, say, 'This is too much, take it out.' I usually find that it's not enough.”

But former Take That frontman Robbie, who has been open about his years of drinking, drug and food addiction, added that he does not believe he will allow his children to appear on the show. The singer shares four children with wife Ayda Field: Teddy (9), Charlton (7), Coco (3) and Beau (2).

He said: “I don’t think the kids will be involved. There will be me giving too much information about the inner workings of my mind.”

The feature film is being directed by Joe Pearlman, the mastermind behind the Bros: After the Screaming Stops documentary. Asif Kapadia, best known for documentaries on Amy Winehouse, Ayrton Senna and Diego Maradona, will executive produce along with Dominic Crossley-Holland.
