Zamp, the company that owns the Burger King and Popeyes brands in Brazil, announced the purchase of Starbucks in the country for R$120 million, this Thursday (6). The movement comes in a challenging context for the food market, especially due to the problems caused during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purchase awaits approval from CADE

The SouthRock group, current owner of Starbucks in Brazil, is facing financial difficulties and has been in legal proceedings since the end of 2023. The company has already declared a debt of R$ 18.8 billion, attributed with high interest and the restrictions caused by pandemic, also taking into account the drop in sales of its products, especially between 2021 and 2022. Furthermore, working capital has been a challenge for the company.

Negotiations for the purchase of Starbucks have been ongoing since February and are now entering the contract signing and purchase phase. However, the completion of the deal must be authorized by the courts and approved by the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE).

New phase for companies

With the acquisition, Zamp will have an increase in its portfolio as it already has established brands in the fast food market, such as Burger King and Popeyes. The company is now looking for a way to diversify its operations and make good use of great growth opportunities within the market, which despite many challenges, continues to be promising.

On the other hand, this transition to Starbucks could show a new phase in its presence in Brazilian territory, as the company is recognized worldwide for its offer of specialty coffees and differentiated experience. With the entry of a new product, the group can seek new strategies and investment to further boost its presence in the Brazilian market.

It is worth remembering that companies will continue to operate normally in Brazil while awaiting the necessary approvals for sales and purchases. This way, they will continue to focus on customer satisfaction and the quality of their products and services.
