Final of Libertadores 2023 is changed by CONMEBOL in agreement with CBF

CONMEBOL brought forward the date for the Libertadores 2023 grand final by one week. The initial date, changed from November 11 to November 4, will take place in Rio de Janeiro, with Maracanã as the stage. The date for the final of the other major Latin American competition, the Copa Sudamericana, remains for October 28, a Saturday. The round of 16 of the competition also changed the date, from June 19th and 26th, to the next August 2nd and 9th. Brazil is well represented in this year’s edition, by Flamengo, (last champion), Palmeiras, Fluminense, Internacional, Corinthians, Athlético Paranaense and Atlético Mineiro.

In the South American competition, Brazil will have Bragantino, Santos, São Paulo, América Mineiro, Botafogo, Fortaleza and Goiás. The stage of the grand final will be in Montevideo, probably at the traditional Centenario stadium, the final stage of 2021, where Palmeiras was crowned champion of the Libertadores that year, against Flamengo, with the anthological goal by Deyverson, in overtime. The athlete currently defends the colors of Cuiabá and was honored, in the first game of the Brazilian championship of 2023, between Palmeiras and Cuiabá, by the President of Verdão, Leila Pereira, with a club shirt, engraved with the phrase “Deyvinho forever in our memory”. The striker defended the former club until the end of 2022, where his contract was renewed.

It is the second time that Maracanã hosts a Libertadores final. In the 2020 edition, played late in 2021, due to covid, Palmeiras of the Portuguese Abel Ferreira, beat Santos, under the command of coach Cuca at the time, in stoppage time, with a great header by Breno Lopes and a perfect pass from Ron. In that game, only 5000 guests had the honor of watching the grand final, due to the restriction imposed by the pandemic.
