On the turn, Flamengo beats Athletico-PR for the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil

Flamengo received Athletico Paranaense, at Maracanã, for the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil. This confrontation is already recurring in the competition, as the two teams have been facing each other in all editions since 2019. Since then, each team has won on two occasions, and won the competition on one of them: Hurricane in 2019 and Malvadão in 2022.

This edition’s confrontation started at full steam and Athletico needed just seven minutes to open the scoring. In a ball that was poorly defended by Flamengo, Vitor Roque beat Pulgar at the top and served Canobbio who, facing goalkeeper Matheus Cunha, hit the exit and opened the scoring. 1 to 0!

After conceding the goal, Flamengo tried to impose itself on the field and started to control ball possession, reaching more than 80% possession at a certain point in the match. However, Jorge Sampaoli’s team failed to create chances of danger to the goal defended by goalkeeper Bento and went down to the break with a disadvantage on the scoreboard.

On the other hand, the second half started in favor of the home team and, at seven minutes, Arrascaeta was brought down by Madson inside the area. The referee reviewed the VAR bid and scored the maximum penalty for Flamengo! Pedro went to the penalty spot and, very calmly, hit the left corner of Bento, who even touched the ball, but could not avoid the goal: 1 to 1!

And at 26 minutes, the enlightened Bruno Henrique turned the game over to Flamengo! Arrascaeta took a free kick from the right, raising it to the second post, where the number 27 was prepared, to break free from Fernandinho’s marking and try hard, on Bento’s counterfoot to turn the game around. After the goal, the home team only managed the scoreboard and secured victory in the first leg.
