Brazilian Championship starts with the highest number of cards per claim since 2019

After the end of the 1st round of the 2023 Brazilian Championship, the number of cards applied per complaint is officially the highest since 2019, the first year in which all members of the coaching staff began to be punished by arbitration.

In all, 21 yellow cards were distributed per complaint in 10 games, which represents an average of 2.1 per game. Besides them, two red cards were given to Maurício Barbieri and Abel Ferreira, coaches from Vasco and Palmeiras, respectively.

Among the most undisciplined teams, alviverde paulista was the one that received the most cards in the opening round of this year’s Brasileirão: two yellow and one red. América-MG, Cuiabá, Grêmio and Vasco come next, with two cards each.

Since 2019, the championship with the highest number of punishments due to complaints has been in 2022: 428 cards and an average of more than one card per match. In his debut, last season’s 18 bookings meant the highest number until the 2023 tournament.

If collectively Palmeiras leads the unpleasant statistic at the start, individually their coach is also the most punished: since 2019, Abel Ferreira has received 21 cards per complaint in all. In second place, Jorge Sampaoli, who coached Santos and Atlético-MG and has just taken over at Flamengo, has 19.

Following, Fernando Diniz (Fluminense, Santos and São Paulo), with 18, is third, while Maurício Barbieri (Bragantino and Vasco), with 17, and Antônio Oliveira (Athletico-PR and Cuiabá), with 16, complete the top 5.

Among the players, Vina (Ceará and Grêmio), with 16 cards, is the most warned. After him, Gabriel Barbosa (Flamengo) was punished 15 times and is second on the list, followed by Rossi (Bahia and Vasco), with 12, and Luciano (Fluminense, Grêmio and São Paulo), with 11.

The study was carried out by the Statistical Spy and released by the GE on the morning of this Monday (17th), and was motivated by the new orientation of the CBF in relation to complaints from players and coaching staff.
