Diana's former butler receives compensation from portal that leaked his conversations with the Princess

This Tuesday (20), Lady Di's former butler, Paul Burrell, received compensation and an apology from the editor of the British tabloid Daily Mirror, for having invaded his phone's voicemail, the amount received by the butler did not was reported by the local press.

Paul Burrell had his mailbox invaded by journalists from the Mirror Group Newspaper, between 1995 and 2008, from the period in which Diana divorced Charles III and two years after the death of the Princess of Wales, in 1997.

In 2002, the butler was accused of stealing belongings left by Diana, but was acquitted of the charges after the court, Burrell blamed the harassment suffered by the princess from the media, the psychological problems she developed and also the collapse of her marriage.

“Between 1995 and 2008, the complainant was targeted by the defendant because he was a close friend and trusted confidant of Princess Diana, and subsequently because of his role in the public sphere following his departure from the Royal Household. During Diana's lifetime, the defendant's activities caused his relationship with her to deteriorate as she mistakenly thought that her highly personal information was being leaked to the press.”Francis Leonard, the former butler's lawyer, told the High Court.

This Tuesday Burrel announced to the High Court that he had agreed to settle his legal action against the Mirror Group, publishers of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and The People tabloids.

Alexander Vakil, lawyer responsible for Mirror Group, informed the court that the publisher “offers your apologies” to Paul Burrell due to “harm and distress caused to him by obtaining his private information and accessing his voicemail messages.”

According to the High Court, there are still 69 lawsuits against Mirror Group related to phone hacking, with a civil trial scheduled for next year.
