This Tuesday (11), the former president Of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte was taken to prison by the country's authorities because of his policy of repression in the fight against drugs. The president of the country located in Southeast Asia between 2016 and 2022, was arrested when arriving from Hong Kong's trip, at Manila, capital of Manila Philippinesand is in custody, according to a statement from the office of current President Ferdinand Marcos.

Duterte's arrest was unexpected, which caused huge riot at the airport. Also on Tuesday the former president embarked to Hague, the Netherlands, to the International Criminal Court (ICC), an agency that issued his request for arrest due to crimes against humanity.

International criminal court

Created in 2002 for ratification by 60 states, the agency has as its competence, judging cases of crime against humanity, genocide, aggression and war crimes. Duterte's case is one more among which the court has been available to act.

Drug war

Duterte's speech throughout his presidential campaign led him to victory in 2016. According to local police, during the ex-promotes' mandate, about 6,200 suspects were murdered during operations that ended in shootings. However, activists claim that the number is even higher.

The TPI prosecutor states that at least 30,000 people were victims of anti -drug policy. In his defense, the former president states that he always directed the police to repressive only in cases of self-defense.
