Mathieu van der Poel crash – The father of the Australian girls who were attacked by Mathieu van der Poel in a hotel in Sydney on Saturday night, thinks it is logical that the Dutch cyclist was angry.
“He had every right to be angry, but not to do what he did,” the father told Australian media. “They’re little girls and he’s very big.”
The children of twelve and fourteen stayed in the same hotel and on the same corridor as Van der Poel, who was in Australia for the World Championships cycling. On the night before the road race, the Dutchman was kept awake by noise in the hallway.
The girls were playing and knocked a few times on the door of the room where Van der Poel and his girlfriend were staying. Finally, the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider pulled the door open and grabbed one girl by the arm, then he yelled at the other child.
‘When I was young, I did things like that too’
One of the girls fell and suffered an abrasion to her elbow. Van der Poel was then taken to the station by the police and was sentenced by an Australian judge on Monday to pay a fine of 1,500 Australian dollars (more than 1,000 euros). On Tuesday, on his return to the airport of Belgium, he expressed regret.

“When I was young, I also did such things,” says the father about the out-of-control game that the girls played on the hotel corridor. “The youngest recently had corona and this was their outing. They were very enthusiastic, but then they got a little naughty. I told them that they too made a mistake.”
Van der Poel will soon have to answer for what happened in Australia in a conversation with the team management of his employer Alpecin-Deceuninck.
