The woman, who claimed to have become a mother to a 10-year-old earlier this month, appears to have not recently been pregnant. Afrilatest also reported on the 10 babies born at the same time, which would set a world record.
South African authorities concluded after investigating that the 37-year-old woman’s story was false. Doctors say the woman has never even given birth before.
The woman was admitted to hospital on June 17 to assess her mental health. The authorities promise to give her the psychological, medical and social care she needs.
The now-debunked news of the birth of 10 babies became world news. Suspicions quickly arose that the message was incorrect; it was not clear whether seven boys and three girls had been born or three boys and seven girls. In addition, the woman refused to tell where the children were located.

The journalist who broke the news of the tenner’s birth has admitted that he posted the message without checking his sources. However, he insists that the woman was indeed pregnant.
African authorities say they will take legal action against the media company and the journalist who brought the report out because of potential reputational damage.
