According to GBD, global life expectancy has been reduced due to Covid
The extent of Covid-19's impact on life expectancy was unknown, but now, in a new study, it has been revealed that life expectancy fell by 1.6 years between the pandemic years (2019-2021), which represents a significant decrease in life expectancy compared to previous years.
Worldwide, the pandemic has impacted more profoundly than any event in half a century, including natural disasters, said co-author Dr. Austin.
GBD Studies
The GBD (Global Burden of Disease), analyzes past and current demographic trends, at a subnational, national, regional and global level, these studies reveal comparable measures of the abundance of deaths and this is one of the first studies that analyzes the expectation of life since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Countries such as Bolivia, Peru and Mexico City had the largest decreases in life expectancy between the years of the pandemic, and scholars also identified excess deaths during the pandemic period, in places such as Jordan and Nicaragua. The African provinces of Limpopo and KwaZulu Natal, for example, had very high mortality rates.

Population and trends
This GBD study evaluated population trends, and the population growth rate began to decline, after years of continuous growth, during the pandemic period, this decline only increased, a survey shows that growth only continued to occur in poorer countries.
“Slowing growth, aging of the population, moving to poorer locations will bring social, political and economic challenges, young populations are decreasing and resources are scarce”, points out Schumacher.
Conducting the study
To estimate excessive mortality, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, scholars count deaths due to virus infection, and the effects of social isolation were also used in the studies, such as the delay in seeking health care, during the period most serious of the pandemic. For those carrying out the research, this study shows the future of health systems, the economy and a valuable basis for the development of policies in the world.
