NBA announces new format for All-Star Game
– Latest basket ball news, just in basketball highlights and lots more.

This Wednesday, the 12th, the NBA officially announced the new format of All-Star Game for 2026. Based in Los Angeles, at the Intuit Dome, the event will consist of a tournament with three teams: two with North American players and one with only foreigners.

This will be the fourth different format for the NBA All-Star Game in the last four years. The selection of the 24 players (12 from each conference) follows the same way. The ten starters will be chosen by fans (50% of the votes), media (25%) and the athletes themselves (25%). The 14 reserves are selected by the coaches.

Fans represent 50% of the votes, while the media and the athletes themselves have 25% each. The rest of the world team will be made up of eight foreigners, including Americans with roots abroad, and the 16 Americans will be divided into the country’s two teams.

If the voting results do not meet the correct number of players for the three teams, Adam Silver, league commissioner, will choose the athletes to fill the teams.

On February 15, 2026, the three teams will face each other in the first phase and the two best teams will make the decision. Matches will last 12 minutes. If each team ends with a defeat and a victory, the tiebreaker will be the difference in points.

New NBA All-Star Game format

In an attempt to increase public interest in the event, after the failure of the last edition (the second least attended in history), the NBA is betting on rivalry between North Americans and foreigners. Today, 25% of players in the league were born outside the United States.

Furthermore, the last seven MVPs have been foreigners: Giannis Antetokounmpo (2019 and 2020), Nikola Jokic (2021, 2022 and 2024), Joel Embiid (2023) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2025).
