U.S. Supreme Court wants to lift abortion right according to leaked opinion, The U.S. Supreme Court is about to lift the right to abortion in the country. The court wants to overturn previous landmark rulings that give women the right to abortion.
This is evident from a document that is in the hands of Politico. It concerns the original and the confirmed statement Roe v. Wade from 1973, which guarantees the right to abortion in the national constitution.
A majority of the court of nine judges wants to reject the ruling. The court also wants to delete a ruling from 1992, which confirmed the original one from 1973.
Conservative Justice Samuel Alito calls it time to “abide by the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the elected representatives of the people.”
The court has a conservative majority. Six justices, including Alito, have been appointed by Republicans. Five of them voted to reject the ruling, the three Democrats-appointed judges are working on dissenting views. Politico learns this from a well-informed source.
Of Chief Justice John Roberts, also appointed by the Republicans, it is not yet clear what he will vote for.
End to guaranteed protection of abortion rights
The court’s decision is likely to be published within two months. Then half a century of guaranteed national constitutional protection of abortion rights could come to an end.
Each state decides in the future to allow, restrict or prohibit abortion.
The destruction of Roe v. Wade almost immediately leads to restrictions on access to abortion in large parts of the South and Midwestern United States. It is expected that half of the states will immediately impose a broad abortion ban.
