When a Federal Revenue agent disembarked asked a military man to place the backpack in the x-ray, the military man was an advisor to the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Alburquerque. Once the process was completed, the presence of jewelry was detected in the x-ray, so the luggage was opened and searched by Federal Revenue agents.

In that luggage was found a ring, a pair of earrings, a diamond watch and a necklace that were valued at R$ 16.5 million, all objects were seized by the Federal Revenue. Shortly after the incident, the military contacted Minister Bento Alburquerque to explain what had happened. The minister then tried to release the jewels and informed that these jewels were a gift for the wife of Jair Bolsonaro, the former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, but the IRS continued with the seizure.

According to the law, for any individual if the value of the goods is greater than 1 thousand dollars (which is a little over R$ 5 thousand), the bearer of the goods has to make the declaration and also pay the import tax, which is 50% of the total value of the goods. But if there was a government declaration that these pieces were an official gift for the Brazilian State, there was no tax on the merchandise.

For Bolsonaro to get the release he would spend around R$ 12 million.

According to the case lawyer Paulo Amador da Cunha Bueno, the delivery will happen as quickly as possible, as he emphasized in his speech, “However, logistics in relation to who will receive it, above all so that they confirm that they are aware of the determination of the TCU. We don’t want to be faced with a refusal to deliver.”

The weapons that were also a gift from the United Arab Emirates will have to be returned to the PF Administrative Police directorate in Brasília. As for the jewels, they must also be delivered in Brasilia, but at a Caixa Econômica Federal branch.

It is also worth noting that the defense of the former president asked for the jewelry to be delivered to another branch of Caixa Econômica Federal, but the request was not granted.
