The former president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, was buried on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, northwest of Nigeria, where thousands of people align to the streets to say goodbye.

Buhari died Sunday in London, where he was receiving medical treatment.

He first seized power in Africa’s most populous nation in 1983 after a military coup, managing an authoritarian regime until his co -workers expelled him less than 20 months later.

When he was elected in 2015 in his fourth attempt, he became the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election there.

Buhari went into power in this election in a wave of goodwill after promising to rid Nigeria of chronic corruption and a deadly security crisis.

He led the country until 2023, during a period marked by Boko Haram’s extremist violence in the Northeast and an economy.

The current president Bola Tinubu, in a statement, described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman … to the core”. Tinubu sent the vice -president to bring Buhari’s body to London’s house.

Others from all over Nigeria remembered Buhari as a president who left the country of more than 200 million people – divided between a widely Muslim north and south – more at odds than before.

For many, Buhari will be linked to memories of the 2020 youth protests against a police unit accused of rights groups and others of extrajudicial murders, torture and extortion – and the deadly shootings of protesters by soldiers.

Coming from northern Nigeria, the slender, Austera Buhari has promised to end extremist murders and clean unbridled corruption in one of Africa’s largest economies and oil producers.

At the end of his eight -year term, however, goodwill about him was disappeared.

Insecurity only grew and corruption was more widespread.

Nigeria also fell into a recession in global global oil prices and attacks by militants in the extensive Delta region rich in oil.

The currency was faltered when Buhari adopted non -orthodox monetary policies to defend its fixed price to the dollar, and a huge foreign currency scarcity worsened.

Inflation was in both digits.

Civil society accused him of authoritarian trends after protesters were killed during a protest against police brutality and their decision to restrict access to social media as young people disable their frustrations against economic and security problems.

Buhari’s attempts to manage the problems were complicated by prolonged medical stays abroad.

His absences, with few details, created anxiety among the Nigerians and some requests for him to be replaced.

There was also anger for his search for contributors -financed medical care abroad, while millions suffered from health problems at home.

Uncertainty surrounds the location of 19 migrants deported to Ghana

Nineteen West African citizens deported from the United States to Ghana were transferred to undisclosed locations under armed guard, their lawyer revealed Thursday, raising alarms about the fate of migrants removed under the Trump administration’s controversial third-country deportation program.

The group, which arrived in Ghana on November 5th and was initially staying in a hotel, has been completely inaccessible since being transported in two separate movements.

Lawyer Ana Dionne-Lanier reported that part of the group was transported by bus to an unknown location on the border over the weekend, while her client and others were transferred “under heavy armed guard” on Wednesday.

“We don’t know the location of any of them,” he said, highlighting that the families have lost all contact with the deportees who are protected from repatriation to their countries of origin due to the risks of torture and persecution.

Controversial US deportation program expands

The disappearances come in the context of a largely secret US program that has sent dozens of deportees to at least five African countries since July, including Eswatini, Rwanda and South Sudan.

Human rights experts have widely criticized the initiative, questioning whether immigrants receive adequate screening before deportation and citing violations of international protections for asylum seekers.

The program represents the administration’s effort to remove migrants who cannot be easily deported to their home countries due to court rulings.

Legal challenges mount against deportation deals

Human rights group Democracy Hub of Ghana has filed a lawsuit alleging that the agreement with Washington is unconstitutional because it bypassed parliamentary approval and may violate conventions that prohibit return to countries where people face persecution.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Justice argued in federal court that it has no control over how another country treats deportees, despite having obtained a commitment from Ghana not to return them to their countries of origin, leaving the fate of the nineteen missing West Africans uncertain in a context of growing diplomatic and legal tensions.

The controversy seems to be deepening once again regarding the ongoing road widening campaign in Varanasi district. People are angry over the action of bulldozers on shops and houses in Dalmandi street. Traders say that notices have been pasted at about 10 thousand shops, due to which the livelihood of more than 50 thousand people is in danger. They allege that the government is making the poor homeless and this entire matter is politically motivated. Dalmandi traders met Chandauli MP Virendra Singh on Tuesday evening, where the MP said that he will convey the traders’ views to the Central Government. The traders bluntly said that if Dalmandi Gali is widened, their business will come to a standstill – in such a situation they are ready to go to court.
