The leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, Nendi Kanu, sued the Police Commissioner in IMO, Mr. Aboki Danjuma, demanding N10 billion in general damage over alleged defamation.

Kanu, in a new action brought by his lawyer, Maxwell Opara, in the Supreme Court of Abuja, also required a N50 million prize as exemplary damage against the PC.

The IPOB leader, in the Marked Call warrants: CV3179/2025, sought a concession of 10 % of the interest on the judgment per year throughout the trial, the sum from the judgment date until it is fully settled.

He sought a statement that Danjuma’s press release published on July 25 “by attributing the terrible murders in IMO communities to IPOB/ESN (Eastern Security Network) members is false, not grounded, speculative and defamatory.”

He sought “an order of perpetual injunction, restricting the defendant, either by him or by the police of Nigeria’s police force to make even more or less defamatory statements.

An order of this honorable court ordering the defendant to issue a public retraction and excuses to the applicant on at least two national sides and national television.

Nigeria’s News Agency (NAN) reports that, although Kanu is the complainant, Danjuma is the only defendant in the process dated 12 August, but filed 14 August by Opara.

Kanu, in his declaration of claims, through Opara, claimed that around July 25, the CP, within two hours after an attack on NDI-Ejezie, Umualaoma and Ndiakuwata Uno in Arondized Ideato Fals Area (LGA), issued a press release published by Mainstream media, “for members of IPOB/ESN.”

The lawyer said that in the press release, the defendant claimed this; “IPOB under the leadership of Mazi Nendi Kanu orchestrated the surprised murders in the communities of IMO.”

He argued that the press release occurred at the time the IPOB had appealed to the controversial lawsuit former part, declaring a terrorist group in the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“Therefore, the order is subject to an appeal examination, making any dependence on a subsidiary issue (Lis Pendis),” said the lawyer.

In addition, Opara argued that Kanu is currently tried in the Federal Superior Court for an allegation of terrorism and that “the judgment is pending and undecided.”

Opara said CP pronouncements were made while the matter was a sub judice and, therefore, harmful to his client’s fair rights.

“The applicant states that the defendant’s false statement was made without investigation, evidence or credible intelligence, as no prison or criminal accusation was started after the press release.”

The lawyer stated that the statements allegedly made by Danjuma had caused serious damage to the reputation of Kanu nationally and internationally.

“The applicant maintains that the statements made by the defendant were defamatory, false and fired by malice, and intended to influence public opinion against him and IPOB,” said the lawyer.

Health unions begin indefinite strike on Saturday

Healthcare unions under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, and the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals Associations, AHPA, have declared an indefinite nationwide strike commencing on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

Unions attributed the industrial action to the Federal Government’s persistent failure to implement the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure, CONHESS, and to address long-standing welfare and systemic issues affecting health workers.

JOHESU National President, Comrade Kabiru Minjibir, announced this in a statement on Friday.

This development comes at a time when the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, is already on indefinite strike over unpaid arrears of hazard pay, poor working conditions and inability to implement agreed social reforms.

DAILY POST reports that JOHESU represents several major unions including the Nigeria Medical and Health Workers Union, the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals, the Association of Senior Staff of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.

JOHESU emphasized that the delay in implementing the adjusted CONHESS remained the main trigger, noting that several other unresolved issues also influenced the decision to terminate services.

“The crux of the matter in the present circumstances is the long delay in the implementation of the report of the High Level Body, HLB, of the Committee on the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure since its presentation to the Presidential Committee on Salaries and Wages in 2022,” the statement read.
