The Great Alliance All Progressives, Apga, said it may not present a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, but may align with “progressives who share their ideology.”

The party’s national president, Sly Ezeokenwa, said this at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

He explained that the decision would be made by the party’s national executive committee, NEC, at the appropriate time, but emphasized that the field of a candidate was not mandatory.

“APGA is the main progressive party in Nigeria. When the time comes, our NEC will decide to present a presidential candidate in 2027 or align with other progressive forces that share our ideals,” he said.

The president defended Apga’s support to President Bola Tinubu’s government, describing -as consistent with the tradition of the party to forge alliances with parties in the center.

He recalled that Apga supported former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and 2015, even when the party had the option to introduce its own candidates.

“We should not apologize for supporting Mr. President’s economic reforms. Our goal has always been to promote progressive governance and secure policies that don’t leave anyone behind,” he added.

The party’s president also noted that Apga remains focused on consolidating his rule in the state of Anambra, where he had power for almost two decades, and expressed confidence that Governor Charles Soludo would be reelected in 2026.

Health unions begin indefinite strike on Saturday

– African Latest Nigerian news, political trends and trending Gossips in Nigeria. Stay ahead with the latest in Afri news.

Healthcare unions under the aegis of the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, and the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals Associations, AHPA, have declared an indefinite nationwide strike commencing on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

Unions attributed the industrial action to the Federal Government’s persistent failure to implement the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure, CONHESS, and to address long-standing welfare and systemic issues affecting health workers.

JOHESU National President, Comrade Kabiru Minjibir, announced this in a statement on Friday.

This development comes at a time when the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, is already on indefinite strike over unpaid arrears of hazard pay, poor working conditions and inability to implement agreed social reforms.

DAILY POST reports that JOHESU represents several major unions including the Nigeria Medical and Health Workers Union, the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals, the Association of Senior Staff of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.

JOHESU emphasized that the delay in implementing the adjusted CONHESS remained the main trigger, noting that several other unresolved issues also influenced the decision to terminate services.

“The crux of the matter in the present circumstances is the long delay in the implementation of the report of the High Level Body, HLB, of the Committee on the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure since its presentation to the Presidential Committee on Salaries and Wages in 2022,” the statement read.
