Horror with Beyonce on Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video launched the horror series this Friday (17th) Swarm – Swarm in Portuguese. The production is inspired by Beyoncé's fans and features the debut of Billie Eilish as an actress.

The plot follows the life of Dre, a young woman obsessed with the fictional singer Ni'Jah. A staunch member of the “swarm”, the name given to the pop artist’s fans, Dre sees his passion take a dark turn.

The teenager is played by Dominique Fishbackknown for her roles in The Hate You Sow, The Deuce and Judas and the Black Messiah.

The Beyoncé case

Even before it debuted on Prime Video, Swarm drew attention due to its similarities with Beyoncé’s story.

Although the inspiration was not announced by the production, the clearest indication of the influence is in the name of the series. This is because the singer's fans are called Bey Hive (Bey Hive), and refer to it as the Queen B (queen bee).

On the occasion of the official premiere, co-creator Janine Nabers' he responded some questions and commented on the emergence of the idea.

“In April 2016, when a certain visual album was released (…) there was a rumor that a girl named Marissa Jackson killed herself because she realized that a certain pop star was being cheated on by her husband (…). I was in a text conversation with some of my friends from Houston and for two days we thought it was a real event – until it was later debunked on Black Twitter“, he said.

“So when Donald (Glover) pitched this idea about a black woman obsessed with a pop star, I said 'I already know what the pilot is going to be' and ran with it.”, he continued.

The speech reinforces the theories since Beyoncé released a visual album in 2016 and was already cheated on by Jay-Z, her current husband.

A stellar production

The series marks the debut of Billie Eilish as an actress and the cast is made up of names known to the public such as Chloe Bailey (Grown-ish), Rory Culkin (Scream 4) and Paris Jacksondaughter of Michael Jackson.

Behind the cameras, the production is also stellar, as it has Donald Glover (Atlanta) as co-creator and director of the pilot episode; and Malia Obamadaughter of former United States President Barack Obama, as a screenwriter.

The first season of “Swarm” has seven episodes, available on the Amazon Prime Video platform.
