In a rare action, Nendi Kanu, leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, filed an apology to the Nigerian judiciary during his last appearance in court.

The measure was described by many stakeholders as a way to the much sought after diplomatic solution for its detention.

Kanu filed the apology through his lawyer before Judge James Omotosho of the Federal Superior Court of Abuja, especially on his recent attacks on the Bint Nyako of the Federal Superior Court of Abuja.

During the court tour, Kanu apologized to the Nigerian government's legal team led by Adegboyega Awomolo for attacking Judge Bint Nyako.

He filed the apology through his new lawyer, Kanu Agabi.

Kanu has been on trial for about 10 years about his agitation by the update of the sovereign state of Biafra.

In September 2024, Kanu, while appearing before Judge Nyako on terrorism -related accusations, caused an outbreak in an open court when he challenged the judge to refuse his trial.

Speaking of the dock of the court, Kanu interrupted the proceedings and announced that he had no confidence in her and demanded that she immediately refused.

Accusing Nyako of prejudice, Kanu had said: “Judge Bint Nyako is using her position to get personal gains. Your son and husband are facing accusations of corruption. And they (the Nigerian government) have told them (the judge and the court) that if they condemn me (they will free their son and husband).

“They (Nigerian government) sent her into my case so they can release or soften their way to her husband and son.”

However, Agabi described Kanu as a good man while begging that there should be room for errors, and they must strive to save and not destroy.

Commenting on Kanu's apology, activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam said the apology, which indicates meekness in court, would go a long way to take the favor to the defendant.

He told the Daily Post: “First of all, I recommend Nendi Kanu and his family for bringing Kanu Agabi in his defense. It was a thoughtful act and I owe praise them for it.

“I must say that the apology made by Agabi on behalf of Nendi Kanu to court is a commendable act, it is the best way to start his defense, considering what happened on the last date postponed with the previous judge.

“Nanndi Kanu needs to be dressed in a meekness personality, a personality that deserves favor of the court, having shown an explosion before the previous court and that is what Agabi did.

“No one is allowed to disrespect the court, however smart or highly placed in society you are.

“Having acknowledged that Agabi is a very brain legal sage, a man who likes the toga of court respect – he did his best, starting with an apology to the court, was well deserved and that the apology will work in Kanu's favor, especially with Kanu's involvement.

“As a senior advocate learned who uses a lovely personality, where he is proud of the court, in all Nigeria courts, you can know that Agabi was once a federation prosecutor and he is one of the few active practice and enjoy a place of reverence in our touch, so bring it to his defense was a thoughtful act and me compensating.

“The matter is in court and the behavior of a defendant before the court is very important. Remember that the court is manned and presided over by a human being whose conscience has not been destroyed by a mere fact that he is a judge.

“So if the court is chaired by a human being who understands what it means to be respected, of course I can tell you that a Nick and a respectable disposition before the court works in favor of the defendant, but.”

Kanu did not admit guilty or confessed to crime with excuses

Idam also pointed out that Kanu's apology was not an admission of guilt or a confession of crime before the court.

“The apology is not an admission, admission, nor is it a confession before the court.

“This does not mean that he has confessed to the crime with which he is being accused.

“It was an act of reference and respect for the court, giving his personality and explosion that created an impression around his personality.

“If deserving or not, the apology became very necessary, especially before this new judge, so that the judge can approach Kanu with the conception of a character who deserves the compassion of the court.

“Otherwise, with the perceived disrespect measured in the previous judge, this judge being a human cannot dodge and pretend not to know that there was an explosion before his brother Justice de Kanu.

“Therefore, it was necessary that this apology was offered and Kanu did well when doing this, he demonstrated that he is an instructed veteran at the bar and demonstrated a rare and unusual knowledge of the work he was summoned to do,” he added.

Kanu's continuous detention is not for any purpose

The activist lawyer asked the IPOB leader to release, emphasizing that Kanu's continuous detention is not good for.

He said, “I always said that the Nigerian government should kindly consider Kanu's liberation necessary, they should consider that Kanu's continuous arrest is not good for.

“It does not serve the interest of Nigeria's peace and unity, nor serves the interest of anyone or any political interest in Nigeria.

“This young man suffered. In addition to the fact that he suffered detention, the question is – what purpose did its detention serve?

“The Southeast crisis has tripled and has no connection with its detention and I can say that the Nigerian government will reach more if Kanu is freed than having it in detention, because he would be the only one to talk to them.”

Kanu's lawyers before Agabi were thrilled

Idam also accused Kanu's legal team before Agabi's advent as emotional and never showed any sign of neutrality.

He added: “One of the very important reasons I agree that Kanu did well for bringing Agabi in his defense is that Kanu's legal team was previously made up of lawyers who are hardly disappeared on this subject.

“They are hardly neutral about their defense, these are lawyers and, by their own rights, activists, whose defense approach is like Kanu.

“They see each other in Kanu's shoes, they are almost thrilled as Kanu. So if you have lawyers like this, it will be difficult to properly defend this client.

“So bringing Kanu Agabi is a wonderful act that was done by his defense and this would achieve a positive result, I have no doubt.

“No one is happy to have their state in clutter, Kanu will never be happy to have their people at war, killing themselves and destroying their properties.

“The Nigerian government is urged to release kindly and gracefully Kanu because it is no longer useful to have it in detention.”

The judgment of Kanu, politician, Tinubu will free him soon – Ibegbu

For its part, the former National Advertising of Ohanaeze NDigbo, Chuks Ibegbu, emphasized that Kanu's judgment is political and requires a political solution.

According to Ibegbu, President Bola Tinubu may disclose Kanu soon.

“There is nothing wrong with your apology. Each soup has a way to lick it, you lick with your lips or your tongue.

“The situations are dynamic. Nothing is fixed, I believe the president will free him earlier,” he told the Daily Post.
