Lily Allen’s new album, “West End Girl”, has just been released and has already achieved impressive numbers: the title song, of the same name as the album, registered 7.5 million streams on Spotify in just 24 hours — the singer’s biggest number so far.

Released on October 24, the album also reached 4th place on the British charts and marked the artist’s fifth Top 10. The project, which is her first musical work in seven years, became a topic for dealing with controversial topics such as infidelity and the end of her marriage with actor David Harbour, known for playing Hopper in “Stranger Things”.

Songs reveal betrayal

Opening the album, the successful track recounts Lily’s move with Harbor and her daughters from her first marriage to New York. The lyrics say that, after the change, she receives a call with the news that she got the lead role in a play in London. The play in question was “2:22”, in the West End — a district where London’s theatrical elite is concentrated —, which marked Allen’s debut as an actress, in 2021. The work even earned her a nomination for the Laurence Olivier award for “Best Actress”.

After winning the role, however, it was necessary for the singer to return to the capital of England and, as the verses of “West End Girl” reveal, it was at that moment that things began to change between the ex-couple. Over the next few tracks, Lily exposes problems in her marriage in which she was cheated on by Harbour.

In “Madeline”, for example, she asks about the actor’s infidelity: “How long has this been going on? / Is it just sex or is there emotion too? / He told me he would stay in hotel rooms, it would never be out in the open / Why would I trust anything that comes out of his mouth?”. The two began dating in 2019 and, the following year, they made their union official. At the beginning of this year, the news of the divorce became public.

Most vulnerable album of his career

“West End Girl” brings together 14 tracks and, according to British Vogue, was recorded in just 16 days, at the end of 2024. Lily explained to the magazine that, although the experiences she had during her relationship with the actor were the inspiration for the album, the lyrics mix truth and fiction.

Both her fans and critics welcomed the album, which, according to the singer, is the most vulnerable of her career.
