Representatives of the G20, which includes the world's 19 largest economies, the European Union and the African Union, approved on Wednesday (11) a declaration containing 10 principles for the development of the bioeconomy. This declaration was the result of the 4th meeting of the G20 Bioeconomy Initiative (GIB), which took place since the beginning of the week in the city of Rio de Janeiro, where Brazil, the current president of the group, celebrated the creation of the consensus as a historic achievement.

The bioeconomy focuses on sustainable innovations that use biological resources, seeking to replace fossil raw materials with less polluting alternatives.

During the meeting, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, emphasized the importance of collaboration between countries and key areas such as forest economies, sustainable use of biodiversity and biotechnology. She stressed that the principles established aim to serve as guidelines for the advancement of the bioeconomy in its various forms, highlighting that this is the first multilateral document on the subject.

Preparation of the document

On Wednesday (11), representatives of the 19 member countries of the G20, together with the European and African Unions, met to develop a set of ten guiding principles for the development of the global bioeconomy, with the aim of being presented at the Summit scheduled for November in Rio de Janeiro, requiring unanimous approval from the group's members.

This document, the result of the fourth meeting of the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB), held in Rio de Janeiro since Monday (9), while the three previous meetings took place via videoconference, aims to promote technical-scientific cooperation between countries and establishes common guidelines in strategic areas, such as biofuels, biodiversity and biosafety.

At the meeting, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, declared: “In the G20 Bioeconomy Initiative, we focus on the exchange of experiences between countries, addressing key issues such as forest economies, strategic use of biodiversity, including genetic heritage and traditional knowledge associated with biotechnology, bioindustrialization and biosafety, among other crucial areas. Our goal now is to establish guiding principles that will serve as a basis for the development of the bioeconomy in its various facets.” .

The bioeconomy is a concept that encompasses innovations based on biological resources, resulting in more sustainable products, processes and services. “This concept not only promotes economic growth, but also constitutes an essential tool for ecological transformation, paving the way for a more just and sustainable society”explained Marina.

The minister emphasized that the bioeconomy strengthens the foundations of a more ethical, inclusive and regenerative economy. “This new cycle of threats cannot leave anyone behind. It is essential that the exploitation of natural resources also serves as a means of inclusion for those in vulnerable situations,” highlighted.

The ten principles approved have the potential to generate a positive impact on the global stage by promoting international cooperation in science and technology, strengthening joint knowledge production and the sustainable development of national economies. The full document, “GIB-G20-Brazil-High-Level-Principles.pdf” accessible to the public for download, reflects the G20's commitment to an innovative and integrated approach in finding solutions to global environmental and economic challenges.

The principles established

The statement entitled “High-Level Principles on the Bioeconomy” represents a consensus among the G20 countries, addressing issues that are crucial to contemporary society. The main commitments include the eradication of hunger and poverty, the inclusion of indigenous peoples and local communities, the mitigation of climate change, the conservation of biodiversity and the promotion of sustainable consumption and production practices. The declaration emphasizes the importance of using transparent methodologies to assess the sustainability of value chains and highlighting innovation through international cooperation, among other topics.

Creation of the GIB

Another important step forward presented by the Brazilian presidency of the G20 is the creation of the Interim Group on Bioeconomy (GIB), which aims to promote dialogue on issues related to the bioeconomy among countries. The 4th meeting of the GIB was attended by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Brazil, Marina Silva, and aimed to promote the exchange of successful experiences among nations. This initiative seeks to strengthen collaboration and the development of innovative solutions to the challenges that the bioeconomy presents globally.

The G20 is made up of the world's 19 largest economies, with the European Union and, more recently, the African Union, consolidating itself as a global discussion forum for economic, social and development issues. In December 2023, Brazil assumed the presidency of the group, succeeding India, marking the first time that the country will become a leader in the current format, foreseen in 2008. At the end of the year, Rio de Janeiro will host the G20 Summit, where the presidency will be passed to South Africa.
