Kamala Harris' suit may reference Barack Obama

Last Monday (19), Kamala Harris caused a stir in the media when she appeared in a beige suit to participate in the Democratic Party Convention, which took place in Chicago. This is because there is speculation that the outfit and the tone chosen by the candidate for the presidency of the United States had a possible political meaning linked to former president Barack Obama. The convention was attended by the main active names of the party, in addition to Joe Biden, current head of state, who withdrew from the presidential race and went to support his vice, Kamala.

Fashion is often used as a powerful tool of expression, especially when it comes to politics. Kamala's choice drew attention because it alludes to a speech made by Barack Obama in 2014. At the time, the former US president wore a suit very similar to Harris' to discuss the country's response to the terrorist attacks in Syria. At the time, openly Republican broadcasters, such as FOX News, for example, considered the outfit to be a major controversy. According to them, the outfit chosen by Obama to discuss the issue was not “presidential” and that his choice could not be excused. In response, his advisors stated that it was the president's “summer” suit. As a result, the outfit became known as the “tan suit”, or “tanned suit”.

Currently, the controversy surrounding Obama's school for official speeches is seen as clear political persecution. This is because other American presidents in the past have worn suits in the same or very similar shades. They even used them to discuss matters with the same seriousness and it was not seen as an “unforgivable act.”

Although the reference has not been confirmed by Kamala's advisors, or by her, the choice may also be based on the fact that the candidate had not prepared a speech for the event. In other words, the outfit may not have been chosen in a planned way and may have been something more casual. However, in any case, Kamala's appearance and outfit became one of the most talked about topics on X (formerly Twitter) on the night of the convention.
