Record-Breaking Soundtracks in Soap Operas

This Tuesday (9), Brazilian music confirmed the loss of one of its greatest voices, the pop-rock singer Rita Lee, who passed away on Monday night at the age of 75, after battling lung cancer.

The singer is one of the artists with the largest number of songs and compositions for soundtracks for TV Globo soap operas and one for SBT. Rita Lee throughout her career accumulated around 70 songs on soap opera albums and some of them were repeatedly part of several soundtracks.

The best-known song is the hit “Poisonous Herb” who was present in four different soap operas and the song “Success Here I Come” was Rita Lee's first single to be part of a soap opera soundtrack on Globo, being part of her album “The Next Attraction”, which passed through the station in 1970.

In addition to being part of the soundtracks, Rita Lee also participated with her voice in programs, such as “TV Woman”, of series such as “One foot in the grave” and miniseries, such as “All the Women in the World”2020, which featured five songs by the singer (Health, Launch Perfume, Ballad of the Crazy, Vidinha It is Mania de Você).

In 1997, Rita Lee in an interview with Jornal do Brasil, reflected on having songs as soap opera soundtracks.

“Completing the opening theme of a soap opera is a single-edged sword, that is, your music burns faster than based on corn husks and you don't receive a single penny. The Zazá one, for example, was terrible for me: it was a cool homage to Fernanda Montenegro as Wonder Woman.”

In 2001, the well-known record label Som Livre released a collection called “Rita Lee – Soap Operas”, the album has 16 songs by the singer that were part of the soundtracks of soap operas on Globo.
