Doctor points out the risks of PMMA
– how to remain healthy, health related news, latest symptoms and treatments.

Doctor Eliane Palermo, member of the Regional Council of Medicine of São Paulo (CREMESP) and the Brazilian Society (SBD), warns in an interview given to CNN Brasil that procedures performed with PMMA can remain in the body for years without causing symptoms until triggering an inflammatory reaction.

Understand what PMMA is and its risks

PMMA is a liquid plastic polymer that when implanted in the body is not absorbed, applied to deeper layers of the skin, it adheres to structures such as muscles and bones, which makes removal of the substance almost impossible.

In an interview, Dr. Eliane explains: “It can immediately cause a vascular problem and then cause a pulmonary embolism, but when it is silent, when it remains in your body for years without being able to remove it, these are plastic polymers, like liquid plastic, that will remain implanted in the body and it can remain there quietly until it has an inflammatory reaction.”.

The doctor also informs that the substance is for exclusive medical use, as it is a class IV health product, that is, its classification is maximum risk.

Substance use and regulation

The product was initially approved for HIV treatments, as a treatment option for facial lipoatrophy in patients living with AIDS. However, Dr. Eliane says that today there is no justification that compensates for the risks and advocates stricter regulation of its use or even its ban. The specialist also warns: “It is not approved for increasing the volume of the buttocks, period. So, we are talking about something that is illegal. Increasing the buttocks with PMMA is not even approved by Anvisa itself”,

She also points out that possible cases of kidney failure in young patients who underwent the procedure are being investigated by medical societies.
