Previously scheduled to hit Brazilian theaters on December 16, the highly anticipated 'Matrix Resurrections' was postponed by a week by Warner Bros, now with a confirmed release date of December 22. The reason for the change in date was not disclosed, but the studio probably wanted to avoid competition with 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' which also opens on the 16th.

A new teaser with never-before-seen images from the production was released by Warner on social media confirming the change in the film's release date. The video also contains new scenes that were not present in the official trailer released last week, one of which shows a dialogue between two people who may be trying to hack the Matrix to rescue Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie Anne-Moss). The fourth film in the franchise was rumored for years after the end of 'Matrix Revolutions' and director Lana Wachowski felt that the story had reached its end, despite numerous requests from the studio for a new film to be produced. However, the filmmaker stated in an interview published by Entertainment Weekly that the loss of his parents was a great personal pain and a powerful source of inspiration for a new story. Read the full statement below:

“It was never interesting for me to continue with the story. Then something really difficult happened: my parents got sick. My wife and I went home to take care of them, and we were very close. When they passed away, I didn’t really know how to process that kind of grief. I had never experienced it so closely.”

The director recalled that during a sleepless night she had the idea to work on a new 'Matrix' film, highlighting the importance of the characters Neo and Trinity who she claims are the most important in her life.

“I couldn’t have my mom and dad, but suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life. It was immediately comforting to have those two characters alive again, and it’s super simple. You can look at it and say, ‘Okay, these two people die and, okay, bring these two people back to life and, oh, isn’t that good?’ Yeah, it worked! It’s simple, that’s what art does and that’s what stories do. They comfort us and they matter.”

'Matrix Resurrections' is directed by Lana Wachowski and written by David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon. The plot is set 22 years after the events of Matrix Revolutions and will show Neo and Trinity trapped in the Matrix with no memory of the events of the original trilogy. But when a young version of Morpheus appears, Neo begins to question his reality and gradually regains his powers. The cast includes the return of Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, and Jada Pinkett-Smith to their roles from the original trilogy. Actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play the young version of Morpheus, a role previously played by Laurence Fishburne in the previous films.
