Becoming a sperm donor: procedure and compensation

Singles, lesbian couples or couples where the man has fertility problems can still fulfill their desire to have children through a sperm donor. A sperm donor donates his sperm to a sperm bank. Women can then use that sperm to become pregnant. Although becoming a sperm donor is a simple procedure without risks, fertility centers are struggling with a great shortage.

Any healthy, fertile man between the ages of 18 and 45 can become a sperm donor, although the age limits may vary per center. Appearance plays no role in sperm donation.
A sperm donor always remains anonymous. As a donor, you do not know who is using your samples and, conversely, a woman does not know the identity of her donor. The fertility center keeps track of which child was conceived by which donor, but it is not allowed to make this information public. It is only used in the event of medical problems.

However, you can decide to donate to a couple or person you know. In that case, both parties will discuss how they will deal with the identity of the donor.

Procedure

If you have decided to become a sperm donor, you can contact a fertility center for an appointment. During that first contact, you will already receive a lot of information about the further course of events.

Before you can donate a sample, your health and sperm quality are screened. For the sperm test, you must submit a sample to the center. You will be given a sterile jar for this and you can isolate yourself in a separate room. It is important that you collect the entire sample. They then check whether the sample is healthy and fertile and whether it can withstand freezing. Sometimes a second sample is examined.

Then follows an evaluation of your health through a medical examination and blood test. The blood is checked for infections or conditions that could pose a risk to the user or the child. If everything is in order, you will be approved to become a donor. You will sign a statement in which you relinquish your sperm samples and thus your rights and obligations as a genetic parent.

After the test phase, you will be given an appointment to donate. You may not masturbate for two to five days beforehand. You can masturbate in a separate room and collect the sperm in a jar. This sample will be frozen and stored. The center will ask you to donate on a regular basis, often once a week.
The sperm of a donor may only be used for six different women. This is to limit the risk that children from the same sperm donor will in turn have a child together. A woman can have multiple children from one donor.

The center will monitor how often your sperm is used and will notify you if you are no longer allowed to donate. Incidentally, you will not receive any financial reward for sperm donation, but your expenses will be reimbursed.
