The Minions Outperform Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick”

The fifth film in the “Despicable Me” franchise has already premiered in Brazil and it's all the rage! “Minions 2: The Rise of Gru” hit Brazilian cinemas on June 30th and attracted 796 thousand people to the theaters.

According to data collected by ComScore, the national collection reached the mark of R$16.6 million in three days. The success of the little villains put “Top Gun: Maverick” second at the box office, followed by “Jurassic World: Domain”.

Directed by Kyle Balda (Despicable Me) and Brad Ableson (The Simpsons), it is estimated that 40% of tickets sold from June 30th to July 3rd will be for the animated feature film.

The film has not lagged behind in American theaters, grossing US$108 million so far. And expectations are high for the July 4th holiday: the animation is expected to break the record for the Biggest Box Office Opening on Independence Day.

The good reception from the public for this production was a sigh of relief after the frustration with the relative failure of “Lightyear“, since they divide the target audience.

The animation also features dubbing by Leandro Hassum as Gru, responsible for the character's voice since 2010.

The new film tells the story of Gru's childhood and the beginning of his career as a villain. After a series of mishaps with the professional villain group Sinister Six, the protagonist and his Minions must do everything to prove their worth, experimenting with their first plans and testing their first inventions. The narrative introduces important characters who will return to be part of Gru's life as an adult, tying up the plots and giving the audience a coherent origin story.

“Minions 2” brought back beloved characters in a lighthearted comedy set in the 1970s and colorful, detailed animation emphasizing the importance of teamwork and true friendships.
