Former First Lady Carla Bruni faces charges in France

Carla Bruni, the former first lady of France, is under investigation in France for allegedly committing irregularities in her husband's 2007 election campaign. The accusations are that she manipulated a witness to favor Nicolas Sarkozy. She is currently under judicial control and prohibited from contacting anyone involved in the case, except her husband, Sarkozy. Carla Bruni's lawyers, Paul Mallet and Benoît Martinez, claim that the decision is hasty and unjustified.

Suspicions hang in the air

Nicolas Sarkozy, who was president from 2007 to 2012, has been charged with the same case since October 2023, under suspicion of witness tampering and association with a criminal organization. The former president's lawyers have already tried to annul the case this year. In addition, the former president has previously been indicted in two cases involving corruption and influence peddling.

Everything is under investigation in the courts to clarify the testimony of Ziad Takieddine, a French-Lebanese man who claimed to have handed over millions of euros from a dictator to the former president's team. At the time of the incident, his wife, Carla Bruni, is said to have quickly deleted suspicious messages exchanged with an influential figure in the French media, which raises further suspicions about the case.

Case is under investigation

Carla Bruni appeared in court in Paris on Tuesday, the 9th, to give statements due to the suspicion of having hidden a bribe from a witness and of being associated with a criminal group with the intention of manipulating her husband's trial.

Currently, the courts are investigating all the accusations and verifying the statements of each witness. In addition, they are monitoring the former first lady, who is also allegedly involved in the case, in an attempt to favor her husband.
