In New York federal court, newspapers sued Microsoft and OpenAI. The lawsuit was filed for copyright infringement.

There are eight American newspapers, including the Chicago Tribute, which this Tuesday (30), filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI, for alleged copyright infringement, in the training of AI artificial intelligence technology.

The New York Times also sued

These newspapers are owned by the investment company Alden Global Cappital, which is an investment fund based in the state of Florida that created one of the largest journalistic groups in the USA. There is even a similar case also represented by Alden's law firm, in which The New York Times has filed lawsuits against both companies.

It is worth noting that, until then, it was the only newspaper taking legal action regarding copyright infringement. And, in this case, OpenAI used the argument that it used publicly available data, with the aim of feeding its platform, including news, which constitutes legitimacy. Furthermore, the company was accused of violating guidelines for using GPT chat to support the process.

Stolen protected items

The accusation in this case is due to an alleged theft of millions of copyrighted articles from the vehicles, without payment to boost the commercialization of their generative artificial intelligence products, according to the case document. Furthermore, there was an accusation of offering literal excerpts from complete articles and attributing misleading or inaccurate information to publications.

In response without specifying the accusation, OpenAI says it takes great care with its products and also with the design process with the aim of supporting news organizations. Microsoft has not yet commented on the accusation.
