Kondzilla is teaming up with Paramount International Studios (VIS) to produce a new feature film about the reality of young people from the slums. The film “School of the Gutter” starts recording this Friday (10).

“Escola de Quebrada” tells the story of Luan (Lucas Righi), a young man enrolled in public education in the East Zone of São Paulo. Faced with invisibility in school groups, Luan decides to start the search for the popularity he dreams of, which could bring him closer to Camila (Laura Castri).

However, things don't go as expected. The protagonist realizes that, contrary to what he wanted, he managed to arouse everyone's fury. Now, the futsal championship is at risk, and the protagonist's friends, Rayanne (Bea Oliveira) and Deivid (Mauricio Sassi), must act quickly to get around the problem.

Belonging to the comedy genre, the youth film displays the traits of the slum culture, influenced mainly by rap and funk, which are part of the local imagination. Other relevant points in the production are the aesthetics, through the clothes, hair and makeup, and the regional demarcations.

“Escola de Quebrada” is a creation by Kaique Alves, under the direction of Alves and Thiago Eva. The film does not yet have a release date, but will be broadcast exclusively on the Paramount+ streaming channel.

The favela aesthetic has been all the rage in São Paulo since 2014, with a focus on “chic” haircuts. During an interview with Kondzilla, photographer Henrique Batista Candido Duarte noted that stylized cuts have gained full force in the favelas: “I’ve always been interested in exploring peripheral culture, and I started to notice that within the funk scene, beyond the music, haircuts have a huge importance. It’s like a uniform for the kids,” explains.

The fact that famous MCs have adopted the chavoso cut has also contributed greatly to the popularization of the favela aesthetic.
