Lip pencil becomes a makeup trend on social media

History of lip liner

According to Lisa Eldridge, makeup artist and founder of her eponymous brand, the obsession with lip glosses came from Hollywood talkies and fanzines. However, at that time, the product was exclusively used for film productions. Lisa says the “boom” of the item began in the 1950s and 60s.

Everything changed when MAC launched a line of lip pencils in 1990. The product's popularity was largely due to black women, as they were the ones who consumed and used the pencil the most to outline their lips and create the effect we know today as Ombre Lips. Black women combined dark-toned eyeliner with clear gloss. Naomi Campbell and some hip-hop personalities adopted this style.

How to choose your pencil
