Switzerland beat Philippines in thrilling Women’s World Cup game

In addition to the first round of the Women’s World Cup, Switzerland did their homework by defeating the Philippines early this Friday (21), by the score of 2-0 in Dunedin, New Zealand. On the other hand, the second match valid for Group A marked the official debut of the Asians in the worlds, facing a more experienced opponent in the competition right away. The hope of the Filipino team was to surprise the Europeans, as well as the hosts did against the already consecrated Norway.

surprise at the beginning

Due to the greater quality of their squad, Switzerland managed to demonstrate a certain superiority from the beginning of the match with greater possession of the ball, while the opponents bet on a well-positioned defense and a fast counterattack. Despite favoritism and a European offensive volume, it was the Philippine team that managed to score goals in the first stage. Guillou received it in front, and took advantage of the defensive failure, dribbling the goalkeeper Thalmann, scoring in the empty net. The Filipina’s move ended up being canceled with the help of the semi-automatic offside.

Technology helped again in the first half, when Switzerland regained control and opened the scoring in Dunedin. Sow ended up getting the worst inside the area in the split with Cowart, who arrived late in the dispute. After a review, the penalty was called and in the collection, Bachmann was competent and moved the goalkeeper.

In the final stage, the advantage on the scoreboard made Switzerland calmer, who managed to impose even more control on the match. The opponents’ mentality followed the same, trying to explore the spaces left by the Europeans, but it was not enough to generate the tie. With 19 minutes on the clock, the marker was increased in another play by the left end. The Reuteler cross found Crnogorcevic behind the marker, free to finish, generating two great saves from goalkeeper McDaniel, but the third left was at the feet of Piubel, who closed the scoring.

The favoritism shown by Switzerland both on and off the field left the Europeans in the partially divided leadership in Group A of the World Cup, mainly due to the hosts’ upset against Norway in the opening of the competition. The victory by more than one goal guaranteed the first place by the balance, while New Zealand scored only 1, but continues with the same score. On the other hand, the debutants are at the bottom, returning to the lawns against the hosts on Tuesday (25), while the selections from the Old Continent face each other on the same day.
