Nebula complex in Orion and occultation of Saturn in astronomical images of the week

Every week, on the Program Spatial Gazewe are showing two astronomical images that stood out last week. We are currently showing a series of programs in which we will show astrophotographs produced here in Brazil, by Brazilians. Check them out:

Nebula Complex in Orion

The first image shows one of the most beautiful regions of the night sky. A detail of the Orion constellation that encompasses Orion's Belt, popularly known as the Three Marys and the Sword, where the Great Orion Nebula is located. Also known as M42, the Orion Nebula is one of the brightest in the sky and, in this image, it appears in the upper right corner. Next to it, the Running Man Nebula. Further to the center, around Alnitak, we have two nebulae that are very popular with astrophotographers, the Horsehead, which is darker, and the Flame, which is more yellowish. In the lower left corner, a piece of a gigantic supernova remnant nebula called Barnard's Loop. All of them are located between 1,300 and 1,500 light-years away, in the direction of the Orion constellation.

The second image is a spectacular record of a rare astronomical phenomenon. On August 20, the planet Saturn and the Moon were aligned for some observers here on Earth. Depending on where in the world one was observing from, the two stars would be very close in the sky or, for some lucky ones, the Moon would hide Saturn for a while. The image we are seeing is of the moment when the Giant of the Rings appears behind the narrow, unlit strip of the Moon visible that night. From Cajazeiras, in the Sertão region of Paraíba, in addition to the perfect alignment of the stars, it was also possible to see the alignment of Saturn's rings with the lunar horizon, providing this fantastic and unique record of Saturn's occultation.
