The 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards took place last Thursday night (17) in Las Vegas, United States, and awarded the highlights of 2022 in international and national music. Brazilians were present among the nominees, including wins in several categories, with highlights for Ludmilla, Liniker and Erasmo Carlos. Rosalía won in the category considered the most important of the night – 'Album of the Year'.
Brazilians stand out with nominations and victories
The Brazilian spotlight began at the beginning of the ceremony, as Anitta was one of the presenters, alongside singers Laura Pausini and Thalía and Luis Fonsi. Despite not winning, Anitta had two nominations for her hit 'Envolver' in the 'Record of the Year' category and in the 'Best Reggaeton Performance' category. In addition, seven Brazilians were awarded in the pre-ceremony. Highlights included Ludmilla and Liniker, who won their first Grammys in the 'Best Samba/Pagode Album' and 'Best Brazilian Popular Music Album' categories with “Numanice #2” by Ludmilla and “Indigo Borboleta Anil” by Liniker, respectively. “I'm reaching places I never imagined, even though I don't speak Spanish or any other language. I'm being respected for my roots and my essence. There's no price or prize that can pay for that.”. Ludmilla said in a post after the ceremony celebrating the achievements, she was also responsible for the award in the 'Urban Music Album' category, won by singer Bad Bunny.

In the list of nominees, but without victories, the highlights were: Jão, Lagum, Luísa Sonza, Marina Sena, Marília Mendonça with Maiara and Maraísa, Caetano Veloso and Criolo.
Rosalía, Bad Bunny and Christina Aguilera are also crowned
Among the big names present at the ceremony was Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican singer was nominated in 10 categories and won in five, namely 'Best Urban Music Album' – “Un Verano Sin Ti”; 'Best Urban Fusion/Performance' and 'Best Urban Song' – “Tití Me Preguntó”, 'Best Rap/Hip Hop Song' – “De Museo”, and 'Best Reggaeton Performance' – “Lo Siento BB:/”, won alongside Tainy and Julieta Venegas. Christina Aguilera was crowned in the category of 'Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album', an award presented by Brazilian Luisa Sonza. The big name of the night was Spanish singer Rosalía, who won in the category considered the most important of the night, 'Album of the Year', making her the first woman to win in the category twice, in addition to three other awards.
New artist at 95 years old
Another name that caught a lot of attention was Ángela Álvarez, who at 95 years old won as 'Best New Artist', tying with singer Silvana Estrada and still being the oldest artist nominated in this category. Born in Cuba, she left the capital Havana in 1962, shortly after the Cuban Revolution and when she was a child her father did not let her sing, despite this her late husband always encouraged her to write her songs. The first album featuring her songs written over decades was produced by Álvarez's grandson, and in her victory speech she made a point of encouraging people not to give up on their dreams. “For those who have not achieved their dream, although life is difficult, there is always a way out and with faith and love you can achieve it, I promise you (…) It is never too late.” Ángela Álvarez's story is being told in a documentary titled “Miss Ángela”.
