Guta Stresser on Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis: “I lost my footing”

Actress Guta Stresser, 49, revealed that she has multiple sclerosis, a disease in which the immune system destroys the protective covering of the nerves and the lesions cause disruption in communication between the body and the brain. In an interview with Veja magazine, the artist spoke in an emotional way about how she discovered the disease and how she has been dealing with it.

Known for her role as Bebel in the series 'A Grande Família,' the actress commented when the symptoms began: “I started to forget very basic words, like glass and chair. If I stayed still for more than an hour watching a movie on TV, I would soon feel pain in my muscles. I had frequent tingling in my feet and hands, very strong migraines and mood swings.” Among all the reactions of her body, she highlights one sensation as the worst: “The Worse still was a constant buzzing in my ear. It felt like there was a bare wire there, causing a short circuit in my head.”

Faced with all these symptoms, Guta sought medical treatment and was diagnosed after a series of tests. “After an MRI, I finally received the diagnosis: multiple sclerosis. I was floored at the time. I didn't even know what it was, except that it affected the brain, and that alone sounded terrifying to me,” spoke. She explained that the doctor told her how the disease works, that it is an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks myelin, which is responsible for the connections of the mind.

Guta talks about her insecurities and how medicine is still unable to prevent or cure the disease. “Experts don't know why this process is triggered. What is proven is that it affects movement and speech. I was very scared. A film was playing out in my head in which I was completely incapacitated,” finished.

The actress commented that she accepted her diagnosis after understanding that the disease would not stop her and that she would undergo treatment.
