The level of Lake Guaíba rises again, reaching 4.7 meters and worrying the population

This Saturday (11), according to a bulletin released by Civil Defense, the level of Guaíba rose again due to the heavy rains recorded in the State. Authorities are still traveling through the flooded areas looking for survivors, around 120 people are still missing, more than 750 are injured, more than 440 thousand people had to leave their homes, 71.3 thousand people were housed in shelters, around 339 a thousand people are staying with relatives or friends.

The number of deaths has now reached 136, mainly due to flooding and landslides caused by the heavy rains that devastated Rio Grande do Sul. Measurements made by the National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA) demonstrate that the level of the Guaíba it rose 10 centimeters in an interval of one hour, in the city of Porto Alegre alone it would have rained the equivalent of 38.3 millimeters in 24 hours, which is a lot of rain in a short space of time.

It rains again in Rio Grande do Sul

With the forecast of rain and winds for this weekend, the population fears that the level of Guaíba will reach 5.0 meters high again. Some people were already able to return to their homes to collect personal belongings, or rescue animals left behind during the unexpected departure. The situation is precarious in the shelters, as there is a lack of clothing so that residents can withstand the drop in temperature.

Civil defense advises residents not to attempt to return to their homes, especially for those residing in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, in addition to the high risk of drowning, diseases caused by contaminated water can also worsen the health situation of the population.

What the authorities are doing
