Understand how the El Niño phenomenon affects winter
Winter starts this Wednesday (21) in the southern hemisphere. With that, the winter will have to count on the presence of El Niño, responsible for the abnormal heating of the waters in the Pacific in the equatorial part and that causes the elevation of the temperatures. As a result, the South and Southeast regions have more rain, and the North and Northeast regions are drier.
O El Niño, equal to La Ninais responsible for changing the patterns of moisture transport, causing changes in the amount of rainfall in the regions of the world.
As per the International Research Institute for Climate and SocietyEl Niño and Lã Niña have characteristics in common such as the tendency to occur between the months of April and June, duration between 9 and 12 months and intervals between 2 and 7 years, reaching peaks between February and October.
El Niño is the positive part of a larger phenomenon known as ENSO. In view of this, in the summer period, the heat is greater and decreases in winter temperatures.
Impacts that El Niño has on the climate in Brazil
It causes droughts in the Northeast and North regions of Brazil, especially in the regions closest to the Equator, in addition to causing excessive rainfall in the South and Southeast regions.
“The effects of El Niño will be noticed in the increase in temperatures at the end of winter, especially in the interior, with a higher risk of storms between August and September between the west and south of São Paulo, south of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais” , as estimated by Climatempo.
