The series Mortal Kombat emerged in 1992 by Midway as a more realistic and violent response when compared to Capcom’s Street Fighter II, a phenomenon in popularity that lasts until today. With the arrival of the reboot, which will be a reboot that won’t invalidate previous games, it’s only fair that we remember a curiosity for each game in the franchise.
- Mortal Kombat (1992): The first game was developed by just four people, Ed Boon, John Tobias, John Vogel and Dan Forden, with limited resources and a lot of creativity. The famous phrase “Finish Him” was recorded by John Tobias and became one of the series’ landmarks.
- Mortal Kombat II (1993): This game was one of the first to introduce hidden characters, including the popular secret boss “Reptile”. Players had to meet specific conditions to face him.
- Mortal Kombat 3 (1995): In this game, the female character Kitana had its origin as an Easter Egg from the previous game, when players discovered that it was possible to face a dark version of her, called “Jade”.
- Mortal Kombat 4 (1997): This was the first game in the series to feature 3D graphics. The “Meat” fighter was originally a test model for the 3D gameplay, but was eventually included as a secret character.
- Deadly Alliance (2002): The intro to “Deadly Alliance” was created using real action figures, which brought a unique look to the game.
- Deception (2004): The game included an adventure mode called “Konquest”, where players could explore the world of Mortal Kombat, complete quests and learn about the characters’ backstories.
- Armageddon (2006): With over 60 playable characters, this game holds the record for having the largest cast of characters in a fighting game in video game history.
- Reboot (2011): This game marked the beginning of a new era for the series, restarting the story of the first three games with modern graphics and revamped gameplay.
- Kombat X (2015): The development team studied human anatomy and martial arts to ensure that the characters’ movements were more realistic and accurate.
- Kombat 11 (2019): The game features an all-star voice-over cast, including well-known actors like Ronda Rousey (Sonya Blade) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator).
- Mortal Kombat 1 (2023): Developed by NetherRealm Studios, the new Mortal Kombat will restart the series, but in another timeline, and therefore, not invalidating the history of previous games.
