Juventus coach Allegri – Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri refuses to throw in the towel after Wednesday night’s 1-2 home defeat against Benfica in the Champions League. It was not the first setback for ‘De Oude Dame’ this season.

Last week Juventus lost 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain. The club from Turin has never before started a European season with two defeats.

“We have never had such a hard time in the Champions League. At the moment it does not make much sense to say that we can still qualify for the next round. It will just be very difficult. We must first focus on the competition match with Monza next weekend,” Allegri said at the press conference afterwards.

The coach was also asked whether he is toying with the idea of resigning. “No, I feel part of the solution. I have to find a solution.”

Juventus has been running less for a few years

Juventus has been in a hole for a while. The Italian record champion won no less than nine consecutive national titles between 2012 and 2020. Under the inexperienced Andrea Pirlo, ‘De Oude Dame’ had to settle for fourth place in 2021, after which Allegri was appointed.

The coach had guided Juventus to five league titles between 2014 and 2019, but was judged on the results in Europe. Winning the Champions League proved a bridge too far, even after signing Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018.

Allegri could not prevent Juventus from finishing fourth last season. After six rounds in the current year, the ‘Bianconeri’ are only eighth. Last weekend they drew 2-2 against Salernitana.

“When I returned here in 2021 I knew it would take time to build something up. These defeats are very frustrating, but there is not much point in talking much.”

Juventus director jokes about Allegri . situation

Juventus director Maurizio Arrivabene has not yet commented on the position of the trainer after the defeat against Benfica. The driver did do that before the duel, albeit with a quip. “Will you pay the next one?” Arrivabene said after being accosted by fans who brought up the coaching situation. The images soon appeared on social media.

When confronted by Prime Video , the director said it was a joke. “While leaving a restaurant, a fan yelled that if we didn’t beat Benfica we had to fire Allegri. I just replied with the first joke that came to mind. It’s ridiculous to blow this up. We have to sometimes too can laugh and not take everything so seriously.”
