Buying a new laptop or PC is always exciting, but it also requires some initial care to ensure that the device runs safely and efficiently. You probably want to just plug it in and start using it right away.

Update Operating System and Drivers

Even if your operating system seems up to date, it's important to manually check for new updates. Windows, for example, frequently releases security updates and improvements that are crucial to the proper functioning of the system.

To check, go to “Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update”. In addition to the operating system, hardware drivers (such as graphics, sound, network, etc.) should also be updated.

Outdated drivers can cause compatibility issues, crashes, or slow performance. Utilities like Driver Booster can help automate this process.

Install and Update an Antivirus

As soon as you turn on your new PC, security should be your first priority. An effective antivirus protects against a variety of cyber threats, including viruses, malware, spyware, and ransomware.

Some popular antivirus options include Windows Defender (which comes built into Windows), Avast, Kaspersky, Bitdefender, and Norton. Once you’ve installed or activated your antivirus, be sure to update it to ensure that its virus definitions are up to date and that your system is protected against the latest threats. Subscribe to a Backup Service

Losing important files can be disastrous, so setting up a backup system is essential. There are several cloud backup services available, including Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud (for Apple users), and Amazon Drive.

These services not only store your files in the cloud, but also allow you to access them from any internet-connected device. In addition to cloud backups, you can consider local backups using an external hard drive or a NAS (Network Attached Storage) to protect your data.

Uninstall Unwanted Default Programs

Manufacturers often include a number of pre-installed programs on new PCs, known as bloatware. These programs can include trial versions of antivirus programs, games, promotional applications, and other software that takes up space and can slow down system performance.

To remove these programs, you can use the “Add or Remove Programs” tool in Windows, or use specialized software such as Revo Uninstaller, which also removes leftover files and registry entries. By removing these programs, you free up disk space and improve the speed of your PC.

Configure Restores and Restore Points

System restore points are an essential safety net. They allow you to revert to a previous state of your system in case something goes wrong, such as after installing problematic software or a failed update.

On Windows, you can configure this in “Settings > System > System Protection”.
Create an initial restore point as soon as your PC is set up, and consider creating new restore points before major system changes.

Set Personal Preferences

A new PC is a blank canvas, and customizing it not only makes it more enjoyable to use, but also more efficient. Adjust the screen resolution and scaling to suit your monitor and visual preferences.

Choose a theme that matches your style, organize your desktop icons, and set up keyboard shortcuts to speed up frequent tasks. Plus, you can set up multiple virtual desktops for different types of tasks (work, entertainment, etc.) to better organize your workflow.

Install Essential Software

In addition to antivirus software, there are other software programs that are essential for everyday use. Browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge are important for accessing the web. A productivity suite such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) is useful for work and studies.

Don't forget to also install media players like VLC for videos and Spotify or iTunes for music. If you work with image editing, consider installing GIMP or Adobe Photoshop, and for programmers, IDEs like Visual Studio Code or PyCharm can be useful.

Set Up Passwords and Security

To protect your PC and the data on it, it is vital to use strong passwords. Create a complex and unique password for your user account, avoiding using obvious information such as birth dates or common names.

Consider using a password manager like LastPass, 1Password, or Bitwarden to store and generate secure passwords. If your PC supports it, enable two-factor authentication (2FA), which adds an extra layer of security.

Additionally, if available, enable facial or fingerprint recognition to make accessing the system more secure and convenient.
