Leslie Van Houten, follower of Charles Manson, leaves prison after 53 years. Understand the case!

Leslie Van Houten, 73, was released from a California prison on Tuesday, July 11, after serving 53 years in prison for his role in two murders. According to her lawyer Nancy Tetreault, Leslie was taken into temporary housing.

In 1969, Leslie stabbed a woman multiple times in the stomach and “has been released for probation supervision,” the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement.

Days earlier, the governor Gavin Newsom announced that it would not appeal a court decision that determined that Van Houten could go on to serve his sentence on parole.

She is expected to spend a year in a halfway house, learning basic skills such as driving a car, going to the grocery store and getting a debit card, according to her lawyer.

WHAT LESLIE VAN HOUTEN DID

For participating in the murders of Leno LaBianca, a Los Angeles merchant, and his wife, Rosemary, in August 1969, Leslie was sentenced to life in prison.

The couple was killed in their home, and their blood was smeared across the walls. In court, Leslie described that, initially, she held Rosemary LaBianca with a pillowcase over her head while others stabbed her, and then she stabbed the woman herself about 15 times.

Charles Manson died in prison in 2017, aged 83, of natural causes, after spending nearly half a century behind bars.
