Contraceptive methods have existed since the beginning of the 20th century, developed by the Austrian biologist Ludwig Haberlandt, and emerged through pills that prevent hormones that stimulate ovulation, which is a fundamental stage for pregnancy. Currently there are many contraceptive methods, including injections, patches and implants, however 90% of them are used by women.

Men also adopted contraceptive methods, even before women, in the 1500s and 1700s, but these methods are more limited, covering only disposable condoms (condoms) and vasectomy (surgery that permanently sterilizes men). Currently, these contraceptive procedures for men have been increasingly developed.

Evolution of male contraceptives?

The studies carried out are carried out using chemical technology decoded by DNA (DEC-Tec), an important process for inhibiting the STK33 protein, present in the testicles of mammals and which affects human fertility.

The experiments were carried out on laboratory mice, the scientists identified this protein in the animals and infertilited them.

The researchers then generated other, more organized versions. According to Angela Ku, a scientist at Matzuk, “Among these modified versions, the compound CDD-2807 proved to be the most effective.”

CDD-2807 was also tested in these mice. “We evaluated various doses and treatment regimens and then determined sperm motility and number in the mice, as well as their ability to fertilize females,” says Matzuk.

The next step for the studies is to carry out the same tests on primates, to ensure the effectiveness of the research.

The greatest success of this research is the lack of hormones and the possibility of reversal, if the man decides to reproduce again.
