“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to remove Defense Minister Yoav Galant from his post,” said the statement.
As news of the resignation became public, thousands of protesters, many of them waving blue and white Israeli flags, took to the streets of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
In Tel Aviv, protesters crowded Israel’s central highway, Ayalon, blocking vehicles for hours.
In Jerusalem, crowds gathered outside Netanyahue’s residence and broke the security cordon.
Three months after taking office, Netanyahu’s religious nationalist coalition has fallen into turmoil over bitter divisions exposed by his major judicial review plans.
“State security cannot be a card in the political game. Netanyahu crossed the red line tonight”, stated opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz.
Both urged members of Netanyahu’s Likud party not to participate in the “national security crushing”. In communicating Gallant’s resignation, Netanyahu’s office has yet to name a replacement.
Earlier this month, President Isaac Herzog, the head of state expected to remain in charge of politics, said the country faced “disaster” unless a broader consensus could be reached to reform the judiciary.
The United States said it was deeply concerned and alarmed by the events reported last Sunday (26) and sees an urgent need for agreement, while reiterating calls to safeguard democratic values.
