42-year-old man dies after ingesting 1 liter of cachaça in exchange for beer

A 42-year-old man was found dead after participating in a challenge to drink a liter of cachaça at once and win, in exchange, two cases of beer. The case took place last Sunday (16) in Santo Antônio do Rio Verde, district of Catalão, Goiás.

Drinking high doses of alcohol can be fatal.

Alcohol can be highly toxic when ingested in large amounts, and can send a person into an alcoholic coma, which can result in death. According to physician Paulo Olzon, the body does not have time to metabolize alcohol in the blood.

One of the main factors for those who get drunk is to lose consciousness, it is in this state that the area of the brain affected by alcohol can shut down vital functions, such as breathing and the heart, which can lead to a stop of the heart and breathing.

Acute intoxication can also lead to arrhythmia, says physician Raimundo Paraná, hepatologist and professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA).

The Ministry of Health states that acute intoxication occurs when the body cannot metabolize alcohol in a certain period of time. The doses necessary to lead to intoxication depend on the individual’s tolerance, speed of ingestion and absorption in the body. Drinking on an empty stomach can be a major aggravating factor for possible intoxication.

Levels that are considered extreme are between 0.3% and 0.45% (which equals 0.3 to 0.45 grams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood). These values can be essential for a loss of consciousness and failure of vital functions, according to the Health and Alcohol Information Center (CISA).

Alcohol consumption in youth can have serious consequences.

The doctor Paulo Olzon points out that excessive drinking is a “rapture for youth” and that it is an extremely serious and serious practice for the individuals who practice it. He also states that alcohol intake should be interspersed with food and water. Challenges like the one reported should not be done, as they do not allow time for the person to hydrate. In this case, it is best not to participate in this type of competition, which, in most cases, can be fatal for the participant of the “joke”.
