Ukrainian president criticizes Arab stance on Ukraine-Russia war

Amidst the ongoing chaos between Ukrainians and Russians, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Arab leaders of turning a blind eye to the conflict that has been going on since February 2022.

In an event that took place in Saudi Arabia, on the Asian continent, Zelensky questioned Arab leaders about the suffering that Ukrainians have been suffering from the war. Speaking in English, the president of Ukraine made harsh criticisms of what he called “blind eye” made by the countries of the Arab League:

“Look how much suffering the long-term wars brought to Libya, Syria, Yemen, how many lives were wasted by years of fighting in Sudan and Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan. I hope most of us are here for the sake of peace and justice.”

The event was attended by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who attended such an event for the first time in a decade (it is worth remembering that only Syria and North Korea actually recognized the four annexations claimed by Russia).

With the presence of a kind of opponent, Zelensky complemented his speech:

“Even though there are people here at the summit who have a different view of war, in our land, calling it a conflict, I am sure that we can all come together to save people from Russian prison cages. Unfortunately, there are some in the world, and here among you, who turn a blind eye to these cages and illegal annexations. And I’m here for everyone to take an honest look, however much the Russians try to influence. There must still be independence. And I want to thank Saudi Arabia, I want to thank most of you for supporting international positions and the UN Charter.”

With all the serious imbroglio involving Russians and Ukrainians apparently far from over, Zelensky made clear the need for the entire Russian army from regions belonging to Ukraine (including Crimea annexed in 2014) and left a promise that he will fight for it.
