In a surprising revelation, the creators of “The OC”, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, admitted that they were pressured by executives to kill Marissa in the series. The controversial decision was revisited during an interview with Vanity Fair to celebrate the production's 20th anniversary.
Controversial decision under executive pressure
The OC creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage revealed details about one of the series' most controversial decisions. In an interview with Vanity Fair, on the occasion of the production's 20th anniversary, they revealed that they were forced by executives to kill the character Marissa, played by Mischa Barton.
Savage recalled the circumstances: “We were under extreme pressure to create a high-impact drama. We were given a direct order to eliminate a regular character. It was a decision imposed from above. It was clear that if we wanted to proceed with a fourth season, we would have to go in that direction.” It is important to mention that the series was being produced by Fox.
The Weight of Regret and Lessons Learned
Schwartz expressed the regret he still feels: “Looking back, we wish we had explored alternatives. At that time, we felt the options were limited and went that route. However, with the perspective of time, we recognize there were several ways to remove the character from the plot, giving Mischa the necessary space and even allowing the chance for their return.”
The screenwriter also highlighted the public's negative reaction: “When we saw the response to Marissa's death, we felt something was wrong. It didn't feel like we had served the public in the way we intended. We immediately felt the weight of regret.”
Marissa met her tragic end at the end of the third season of The OC, in a car accident caused by her ex-boyfriend, Volchok (Cam Gigandet). The series' final year followed the journey of her friends, Ryan (Ben McKenzie), Summer (Rachel Bilson) and Seth (Adam Brody), dealing with the grief and absence left by her death.
