Russia says peace talks with Ukraine are meaningless

Last Thursday (2), Russia said it saw no point in the conference to reach a peace agreement between the country and Ukraine. The meeting will take place at the request of the President of Ukraine and will have dozens of countries invited to discuss the situation of the war between Russia and Ukraine, and will not include the participation of any Russian representative. Kremlin spokesman says meeting is meaningless

In a statement this past Thursday (2), Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, said he did not trust the initiative of this meeting. “We don’t understand what kind of milestone this peace conference is. What kind of conference can we talk about, what kind of serious conference with serious expectations of some kind of result, without the participation of Russia?”, said Peskov. For the Russian government, this meeting is a project of the United States Democrats and for this reason they do not intend to be present.

Despite having accepted the meeting, the Swiss government said it did not see the possibility of a peace agreement if Russia was not present. Brazil was also invited to participate in the meeting, but President Lula said he would only accept the invitation if Russia was present.

For Ukraine, Russia's participation could disrupt the meeting through manipulation and the force of attacks. According to Ukrainian spokesman Dmytro Kuleba, in an interview with Foreign Policy, Russia's participation would not be useful “if it is not possible to guarantee that they act in good faith,” said Kuleba.

Further advance into Ukrainian territory

Since July 2022, Russia has made the biggest advance yet. Since December, Ukraine has suffered from a lack of artillery and the Russian army took the opportunity to make an advance on Avdiivka. In February, Ukraine announced the departure of its army from the city. Even though it lost a lot of territory, Ukraine was reluctant to admit these losses, generating criticism from analysts.

Ukrainian authorities also warned of threats to Chasiv Yar, where Ukraine lost control to Russian forces. According to CNN Brazil analysts, because the city is on a hill, Russian forces can advance along the canal and gain more strength over Ukrainian military cities.
