Brazil will zero deforestation by 2030!
The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, declared this Monday (17th), during the summit of the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States with the European Union, that Brazil will fulfill its part in the climate agreement. Lula reaffirmed that the country is committed to reducing deforestation in the Amazon forest area to zero by the year 2030.
Brazil has the expectation that the countries that make up the Amazon fund will increase their contribution so that the promise to zero deforestation is fulfilled within the deadline.
During the previous government, of Jair Messias Bolsonaro, Brazil had left the bloc, but the new government returned to the bloc.
the meeting with Ursula Von der Leyen, President of the European Union, took place around four o’clock in the morning (Brasília time) and lasted about two to three hours. In addition to Ursula, Pedro Sanchez, who is Prime Minister of Spain, participated in this meeting.
In a post-meeting speech, President Lula stated that his government is committed to concretely discussing climate and ecological issues, saying: “Brazil has a strong tendency towards renewable energy. We have an energy transition program that we want to share”.
By reaffirming that Brazil is more than ever engaged in the global climate debate, Lula says that Brazil is aligned with the global commitment to preserve forests and the climate, and that its promise will be fully fulfilled. The president of the European Union stated that Lula’s presence is historic and generates a very relevant impact on the current world scenario.
In addition to climate issues, the meeting also addressed the conclusion of a trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, which has been going on for more than two decades. In this agreement, free trade between the regions would be established, thus facilitating the export and import of various products from the blocs with lower taxes.
This Monday (17th), the president will have other bilateral meetings, in addition to participating in a meeting at a business forum that takes place in parallel to the summit. Lula’s return to Brazil is scheduled for Wednesday (19).
